While flu season has been upon us for some time, the CDC reports that seasonal influenza activity continues to increase across the United States. One key measure that can be taken to help prevent getting sick from the flu is to get vaccinated annually. This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week, and we encourage you to consider getting vaccinated in order to protect yourself and your community. The CDC recommends flu vaccines for anyone 6 months and older.

Today is World AIDS Day, a day to collectively raise awareness for the fight against HIV, support people living with HIV, and remember those who lost their lives to an HIV/AIDS-related illness. Since its recognition in 1984, more than 35 million people have died from HIV or AIDS-related illnesses and an estimated 38 million people are living with the virus today. Though great strides have been made since 1984, there is still a critical need for increased awareness about protecting oneself from HIV, fighting the stigma, and raising money to continue supporting the movement.

We are devastated by the recent shootings at Club Q, an LGBTQI+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, CO.

The LGBTQI+ community has continued to face a multitude of hate crimes. We stand by this community as we champion social justice, equity, and health for all.

Our hearts break for the victims and families of those who were killed and injured in this recent tragedy, as well as those traumatized by this event. As President Biden said, “We must address the public health epidemic of gun violence in all of its forms.”

We hope others join us in our commitment to do more to end these unacceptable acts of gun violence. We urge everyone to reach out to their members of Congress to pass additional legislation to prevent these violent acts and end this public health epidemic.

Preterm and LBW infants have a higher risk of developmental disabilities including cerebral palsy and retinopathy of prematurity. Health Literacy is important because everyone must be able to understand, communicate, and process health information to navigate and advocate for their health. Having adequate health literacy skills can help prevent and manage health problems.

Some communicable diseases can be spread from a person getting bitten by an animal or insect. There are more than 200 communicable diseases including COVID-19, Ebola, Polio, Influenza, Chickenpox, Monkeypox, Hepatitis (A, B, and C), Human Papillomavirus, Tuberculosis, West Nile Virus, Zika, and more.

Today is World Polio Day! Partners around the world collaborate to work towards eradicating polio through polio immunizations. Poliomyelitis, also known as poliovirus or polio, is a disease that is spread through person-to-person contact from food and unsanitary water. Polio affects the spinal cord and can cause paralysis of the body. Before 1988, there were over 125 countries with polio cases. Currently, there are only two countries with polio cases. Since 1988, polio cases have reduced by about 99%.

Hello everyone! My name is Christina C. I am a second-year MPH student in Health Promotion and Health Behavior at Oregon State University @cphhs #cphhs. My public health passions include access to healthcare, health literacy, and prevention of chronic and communicable diseases. I chose to study public health because I believe public health is everything. Public health strives to prevent diseases and illnesses, intervene when individuals and communities are sick, and promote positive health outcomes.

I always enjoyed promoting health but was not aware that health promotion is a field within public health. During my sophomore year in undergraduate studies, I discovered core public health classes such as social and individual determinants of health and health program planning and absolutely fell in love with the discipline. Over the years, I had the opportunity to explore public health as a community health worker. I have observed the health disparities and gaps within a community due to language barriers. I hope to continue to work towards bridging those gaps to promote health and well-being.

This week, I will have the opportunity to take over for the #ThisIsPublicHealth #AmbassadorTakeover. I will be discussing World Polio Day, Communicable Diseases, and Health Literacy. Please stay tuned!

The Turnaway Study is a prospective longitudinal study done by the University of California, San Diego's Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health Program.

The study looked to examine the differences in mental health, physical health and socioeconomic consequences of women who received an abortion compared to women who were turned away due to being past the gestational age limit ("turnaways").

1000 women were recruited from 2008 to 2010 based on those characteristics from over 30 abortion facilities around the country. Every 6 months participants were interviewed about a wide-range of topics from physical and mental health to employment and educational attainment to relationship status and more. These slides highlight just a few of those findings.
